Maison Shanghai Opens Today — 1,000+ Brands, 80,000㎡ and Four Halls of China’s New Design Direction

DESIGN WEEK · SHANGHAI 2026

Shanghai’s biggest September design-and-furniture week starts today. Maison Shanghai opens September 7 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center, followed tomorrow by Furniture China at SNIEC. Together, the two shows are expected to bring more than 3,200 brands across 350,000㎡.

Maison Shanghai is the design-led half: interiors, materials, emerging Chinese brands and future-living ideas. Furniture China is the larger sourcing and manufacturing platform. For anyone watching where Chinese furniture is moving beyond low-cost production, this week is one of the clearest snapshots of the year.

Maison Shanghai is not simply another furniture fair

The 2026 edition uses the theme Design Without Limits and reorganizes its 80,000㎡ show around four themed halls plus a Design Gathering programme. More than 1,000 brands, 100 forums and over 20 special exhibitions are planned.

The bigger story is Chinese design moving from product to lifestyle

International buyers have long come to Chinese furniture fairs for factories, price and manufacturing capacity. Maison Shanghai increasingly makes a different argument: Chinese brands want to compete through authorship, material culture, retail experience and lifestyle positioning as well.

The question this week is not whether China can manufacture furniture at scale. It is which brands can create a design language that travels internationally.

Tomorrow, Furniture China adds the industrial scale

Furniture China opens September 8 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. The fair covers finished furniture, upholstery, dining, outdoor, commercial and office furniture alongside materials, hardware and manufacturing supply chains. Organizers say brands from 25 countries and regions will participate.

Five things worth watching this week

1. New Chinese furniture brands — brands building recognizable visual language.

2. Materials — traditional craft translated into contemporary interiors.

3. Outdoor living — an expanded Furniture China category.

4. Commercial furniture — office, hospitality and contract products adopting residential aesthetics.

5. Smart home without the gadget look — technology integrated into interiors rather than displayed as standalone hardware.

Which fair matters to you?

Designers and editors: start with Maison Shanghai. Furniture buyers and brands: Furniture China offers the broader supplier and product map. Interior and hospitality studios: both are useful — Maison provides the creative layer while Furniture China adds specification and sourcing depth.

Why this week matters

Shanghai is useful because design and manufacturing are visible in the same city at the same moment. The strongest signal to watch is whether Chinese furniture continues moving from being described by where it is made toward being recognized by who designed it and what it stands for.
