Seoul Closes a 10-Lane Boulevard for Music This Weekend — How to Visit Seoripul Music Festival 2026

LIVING INDEX · SEOUL / THIS WEEK / CITY EXPERIENCE

For two days this weekend, Seoul will remove cars from a 900-meter stretch of a ten-lane boulevard and turn the road into a public music venue. Seoripul Music Festival runs September 19–20 on Banpo-daero between Seocho Station and Seocho 3-dong Intersection, mixing classical music, jazz, K-pop, public drawing, family programmes and a closing fireworks show.

For international visitors, the street transformation is as interesting as the lineup. This is a chance to experience a major Seoul road as temporary public space rather than simply attend another concert. Several headline programmes use advance reservations, so check availability before the weekend.

Choose Saturday for classical and jazz

Saturday begins with a parade and the festival’s large public drawing programme before shifting toward classical music in the evening. The headline Classic Night includes the Seocho Symphony Orchestra, Korean vocalists and a string quartet made up of LA Philharmonic members performing in the middle of the closed boulevard. Jazz follows later in the evening.

One day earlier, on September 18, Seoul Arts Center hosts a pre-festival event combining a live orchestra with a K-fashion runway at its Music Plaza, extending the festival beyond the road itself.

Choose Sunday for families, K-pop and fireworks

Sunday starts with outdoor yoga and a children’s classical programme, then moves through local stages toward a 7 p.m. K-pop finale featuring Crying Nut, Jaurim and Lee Seung-yoon, followed by fireworks. If the headline concert is your main reason to visit, check the official reservation page rather than assuming all stage seating is walk-in.

The road is the real venue

The festival is built around a simple but dramatic urban move: remove traffic from Banpo-daero and give the asphalt back to people. On Saturday, roughly 2,610 square meters of road becomes the ‘World’s Largest Sketchbook,’ with around 100,000 pieces of chalk available for public drawing. Other sections become a music library, art market, activity areas and food zones.

Because the boulevard is fully closed from midnight Saturday until 4 a.m. Monday, do not plan to arrive by car. Line 2 to Seocho Station is the simplest starting point, and the event then unfolds south along the road.

TRAVELER NOTES

Booking — selected headline programmes including Classic Night, K-Pop Night and Kids Classic use advance reservations; check the official site for remaining seats.

Language — stage introductions and detailed programme information may be Korean-first, but the outdoor format is easy to navigate visually.

Payment — the main festival is free; bring a physical international card for food and market purchases.

Transport — use Seocho Station on Line 2. Road closures make taxis and cars less convenient near the site.

Weather — much of the experience is outdoors, so verify same-day weather and operational notices.

Why it is worth seeing now

Seoul has plenty of music venues, but this weekend offers something more specific to the city: a piece of transport infrastructure temporarily redesigned as culture. Classical music, K-pop, drawing and everyday street life occupy a road normally defined by cars.

For travelers interested in how Seoul uses public space, Seoripul is less about checking off a famous attraction and more about seeing the city behave differently for one weekend.
