A Design Lover’s Guide to DDP and Euljiro — How to Read Seoul Beyond the Landmark

DDP is Seoul’s obvious design landmark, but the more revealing route continues west into Euljiro, where printing, metalwork, lighting and small-scale manufacturing still sit beside cafés and galleries. Together they explain two very different versions of how Seoul makes things.

Begin with the designed city
Walk DDP before going inside. The building’s continuous surfaces, exhibition halls and public circulation make it a useful introduction to Seoul’s institutional design culture. From Oct. 14–25, Seoul Design Week adds a reason to spend longer here, but the route works year-round.
Then walk toward the city that manufactures
Euljiro is less legible as an attraction. Its value is the overlap of printing shops, hardware, lighting, metal fabrication, old restaurants and newer cultural businesses. Go during business hours if you want to see the production district functioning rather than only its nightlife.
How to move
Start at Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station, explore DDP, then move west toward Euljiro 4-ga and 3-ga. The walk is straightforward but the most interesting streets are side alleys, so allow two to three hours. Cards work in most contemporary venues, while some small legacy businesses are easier with Korean-language map listings and basic Korean.
What to pair nearby
For contemporary culture, continue toward Sewoon Sangga and Cheonggyecheon. If your priority is shopping, return toward Dongdaemun’s retail district instead. Avoid trying to add Seongsu or Hannam on the same half-day; they belong to different design ecosystems and require transit.
