Oil Tank Culture Park Guide — How to Read Seoul’s Industrial Reuse in Mapo
LIVING INDEX · SEOUL / ADAPTIVE REUSE GUIDE
Oil Tank Culture Park in Mapo turns a former petroleum storage depot into six cultural tanks and an open public landscape. It is one of Seoul’s clearest places to see adaptive reuse at the scale of infrastructure rather than a single renovated building.
Nearest station World Cup Stadium Station, Line 6, Exit 2, about 10 minutes on foot
Tank hours 10:00–18:00, closed Monday
Admission park and general access free; individual programs may vary
Read each tank differently
T1 became a glass-fronted pavilion, T2 a performance space, T3 preserves the original tank, T4 is used for cultural exhibitions, and T5 explains the site’s transformation. T6 was built using materials recovered from other tanks.
Why the site works
The project does not hide the industrial scale. Circular walls, steel surfaces and the distance between tanks remain part of the experience, so the landscape itself explains what the place used to do.
Traveler notes
No booking is needed for a general independent visit. Individual exhibitions or programs can have separate schedules. English, Chinese and Japanese leaflets have been provided, but program-level English support varies. Bring a card for cafés or paid programs.
Pair it nearby
World Cup Park and Haneul Park are the natural additions. Keep the day in Mapo’s western green belt instead of adding a distant central-Seoul attraction.
DESIGN TAKEAWAY
The park is valuable because it preserves enough of the original petroleum infrastructure to make the transformation legible rather than decorative.
