Seonyudo Park Guide — How Seoul Turned a Water Plant into a Landscape Park
LIVING INDEX · SEOUL / ADAPTIVE REUSE GUIDE
Seonyudo Park is one of Seoul’s clearest adaptive-reuse landscapes: a former water-treatment plant on a Hangang island was transformed into a public park while retaining concrete basins, industrial traces and the logic of water infrastructure.
Best for landscape design + adaptive reuse
Suggested time 60–90 minutes
Admission public park access is free
Read the old infrastructure first
Do not treat the concrete structures as decorative ruins. The park’s identity comes from reusing the scale and geometry of the former treatment facilities, then layering planting, paths and water over them.
How to approach
Crossing Seonyugyo Bridge gives the arrival a clear sequence from city to island. Once inside, move through the denser reused structures before opening out toward the Hangang views.
Pair it nearby
Keep the itinerary around the river and Yanghwa Hangang Park. Adding a distant design district such as Seongsu or Hannam weakens the route; this is better as a slow half-day focused on landscape and public space.
Visitor notes
Use Seoul’s official park information to confirm facility hours and temporary closures. Major transit and cafés nearby accept cards; the park itself does not require a general ticket. English interpretation on individual signs can vary, so international visitors may want a translation app for detailed historical panels.
DESIGN TAKEAWAY
Seonyudo remains relevant because it treats obsolete infrastructure as material for a new public landscape rather than erasing it.
